STEM Technology Learning in Early Years
STEM Technology Learning in Early Years
We began by auditing the children’s e-learning journals to identify a gap in children’s technology learning. It was then through discussions and questionnaires that we identified that staff’s confidence levels in using technology alongside a lack of resources were hindering the promotion of technology learning in the ELC.
STEM has been a priority within our improvement plan since 2019.
Firstly, through identification of our gaps in children's learning, staff confidence levels and available resources, we discussed the impact this was having for our children. Following this, we applied and were successful in securing a STEM grant to support development within the ELC.
The staff team participated in a range of training to support their skillset and confidence to use various software, such as Thinglink, Canva, Screencastify and Sphero Indi. After the team undertook the training, they shared their learning and the new resources with the children.
This learning journey has enabled children the opportunity and space to use their curiosity, critical thinking and communication skills with each other and with staff. Through the introduction of resources, children have investigated and explored new technology in a creative and innovative way. We have provided learning and fun experiences which support the development of our children's skills for life and learning.
We have recently shared our development with families through a family learning event in which the children took the lead to share their learning with an adult. We also incorporated a variety of new resources and training within the event. Alongside collaborating with Education Scotland and SSERC.
