Team talks during remote learning
During Remote Learning Deerpark Primary set up Team Talks to keep a sense of connectedness and connectivity with our pupils and families.
During Lockdown Deerpark Primary hosted Team Talks (assemblies) on a weekly basis. Our objective was to stay connected with our learners and families. Each week, we shared examples of Remote Learning from Primary 1 to Primary 7 and celebrated our successes each week.
We awarded certificates for demonstration of school values and parents and carers were able to nominate learners to receive an award. This allowed us to stay connected with our families and keep our values at the forefront of our minds. We also gave our families a fun challenge to do each week.
An example of this was to build a tower using household objects.
We set up Google Meets for P1- 3 and P4 – 4 and shared the codes on Google Classroom. Children and their families logged into the meetings at the given time and we held a virtual Team Talk. Each week children from different year groups shared elements of their learning and we awarded learners Values Certificate if they had displayed one of our school values of Fairness, Ambition and Respect.
We also set a weekly family challenge. Parents/carers were able to participate in these. These included ‘building a tall tower, finding things of different colours, going on a sound and number hunt…
Our learning assistants also held a weekly quiz as part of the Team Talk.
Various staff members were included in these including our janitor, learning assistants, members of teaching staff and the senior leadership team.
Our Team Talks have continued as the school has returned to face to face learning. We continue to share learning successes and reinforce our school values and rules weekly.
Feedback from our Team Talks have been positive. The children enjoyed seeing other children from the school and seeing the work they had been doing during Remote Learning. Parent/carer feedback stated that they enjoyed seeing different members of staff leading on different aspects of the Team Talk and not just the Senior Leadership Team all the time.
