CONTEXT / BACKGROUND
Following the release of the refreshed narrative in 2019, we consulted with learners regarding our BGE curriculum. Learners highlighted that they were aware of certain skills but struggled to identify skills across learning. This was also highlighted by our Skills Development Scotland Careers Adviser. Therefore, we made changes to our BGE curriculum to incorporate dedicated skills rotation periods in a range of subjects. This has been further developed over the last year and has incorporated staff and learner collaboration on a variety of learning approaches for the development of transferable skills.
WHAT WE DID
- Created a skills-based curriculum for S1 and S2 that follows a 6-week rotation of a range of subjects
- Created a consistent approach to skills across the whole school; The Skills Agenda, working in partnership with the DYW officer and SDS advisor
- Supported staff in developing their understanding of what transferable skills look like in different settings through interactive workshops
- Used learner and staff feedback to amend courses and the structure of rotations
IMPACT / OUTCOMES
- Through observations and focus groups, learners are starting to identify transferable skills and how they link to life learning and the world of work
- Staff are developing their practice to ensure learners are aware of the importance of transferable skills
- There have been greater opportunities for staff collaboration through professional dialogue
