Parental engagement with the UNCRC
Data collected through discussions and observations with school staff and learners highlighted a need to further raise awareness of children’s rights and additional support needs.
The initial focus would be parental engagement as it was felt this would provide an intervention that could fully support all families within the school community.
To action this plan, the Senior Leadership Team and relevant lead teachers led live parental presentations to inform parents about children’s rights and additional support needs. In order to be accessible to all families, these sessions were also recording and uploaded onto the school website. To further support families, within school, we have also had awareness days throughout the year, where childrens’ rights have been embedded. For example, Go Bright Day to raise awareness for muscular dystrophy to support an individual in the school.
We further provided parents with access to our Rights Respecting Schools curriculum on our school website - St Margaret's Primary School - Rights Respecting School (st-margarets.falkirk.sch.uk)
Next steps:
We are going to engage with parents through learning events, incorporating children’s rights. These will take place next session. We are hoping to improve attendance at these events by:
Reflecting upon the progress, the live parental session was not as well attended as hoped. However it is now on our website which allows parents to access it freely and whenever they have time. We have also had to consider other ways to engage parents if they were unable to attend such as offering the session on our website and consider inviting parents into school next session.
We gathered parental feedback from parents who had attended the live sessions and all spoke positively of the information shared.
We considered the feedback from parents and have decided to revisit these sessions annually and invite parents in to share information through further family learning events which will involve children and families completing learning activities together. It is hoped this will further develop parental understanding of ASN, inclusion and equity.

From this case study, the lessons learned were that online sessions weren’t attended as well as we had hoped. Parents advised that they were more likely to attend if sessions were in school and this is something we will incorporate next session.
Another lesson learned was ensuring importance is placed on the numerous ways to embed and raise awareness for different people. We will continue to consider the effect of continually working in partnership with parents to fully support all families within the school.
