Parental engagement during a pandemic
Clackmannanshire Council partnered with Children in Scotland to begin a project called “Food, Families, Futures” with funding from Scottish Government. The schools were asked who would like to participate and the team at Abercromby felt this was a fantastic opportunity to further develop our existing Parental Engagement. This was originally planned as a project to be run after school in the school kitchen, with families coming along and cooking together then everyone sitting down together for a meal. However, due to Covid restrictions, this became an online project. Some of our families involved were already attending supportive family groups within school, although this was open to everyone.
We offered all families in school the opportunity to participate in Tasty Tuesday. So far we have had 3 blocks running, with 12 families participating in each block. A Google Classroom was set up for the 12 families to build an online community. Here, they could access their weekly recipe and instructional videos. Families collected their bag of ingredients from the local Co-op on a Monday and then logged in to their Google Classroom on a Tuesday to find the recipes and videos. Families could then add images and videos to show them working together to cook the meal. The children were encouraged to chop, peel, dice and slice the ingredients independently, with supervision to develop their cooking skills. The families cooked together, then sat down to enjoy the meal together too. We feel that sitting down together as a family for a meal is a really important value to have and we encourage this during our family groups too.
We created partnerships with our local Co-op who provided the food bags each week for us and with a local Tearoom who supplied the recipes and instructional videos. Each week, the food order was placed with the Co-op and the staff made up the bags of ingredients to be collected on a Monday, before the cooking on a Tuesday. Before beginning the project, staff went along to the Ladybird Tearoom and worked with Alison to create the instructional videos showing families how to cook each meal. Alison provided us with 3 “Winter Warmer” recipes which were used in each of the blocks.Google Classroom allowed the families to engage with each other. They could see others’ photos and videos and often left comments for each other, praising their efforts.
