Learning Powers and Steps to Success
Learning Powers and Steps to Success
Pupils were finding it difficult to describe their progress in learning, they did not see themselves as active participants in their learning. It was important that they were able to understand their learning journey and be engaged in the planning and assessment of their own progress.
The development of our Visible Learning Journey highlighted the need for children to be more active participants in their learning.
62% of P5 pupils identified that they were in charge of their own learning, 29% said their teacher was in charge of their learning, 5% said their parent were in charge and 5% also said that Mrs Fox was in charge of their learning. At this time only 3 out of 21 pupils (14%) could give an accurate definition of what it means to be a Visible Learner.
This group of pupils became the champions for supporting pupils to become more active in their learning. The VL Group have successfully raised awareness of the agreed Langlees Learning Characteristics with pupils and parents through newsflashes and posters shared on Seesaw, supported by Creative specialist.
They worked with VL coaches to create breakdown posters for each learning power and the creative arts specialist to create visuals for each power. They created Learning Pit posters and supported teaching around strategies and tools children can use to help themselves in their own learning when facing a challenge.
The group created videos for all classes to share to promote and describe each learning power and this was a very powerful medium for other pupils; and kept these descriptions and concepts deeply rooted in their own context.
All classes are now using a consistent whole school approach to Learning Intentions and Steps to Success. Learning walkthroughs highlighted an increase from 40% of classes in March 2020 to 100% of classes in December 2020 sharing LI and STS, and an increase from 60% to 100% of pupils questioned knowing the learning intention.
Increase in % of pupils identifying themselves as the person in charge of their learning . Increase in number of pupils identifying learning characteristics and not learning behaviours when discussing what makes a good learner. Increase in % of pupils observed using strategies and tools when facing a learning challenge.
Visible Learning Leadership Group will have evaluated HGIOURS theme 2 ‘Our Teaching and Learning’ with pupils.
