Kitbag Health and Wellbeing Intervention
Avonbridge and Drumbowie Learning Community have been utilising the Kitbag intervention across the whole school. Staff recieved INSET training about the resource and have been given time and freedom to explore the opportunities it brings.
Kitbag helps children and young people relax, share their feelings, and express their joys and frustrations. It helps them take care of themselves and form better relationships with each other.
Kitbag is a multi-sensory resource designed to help children and young people learn about and understand their own and others’ emotions.
Kitbag helps adults reach out, listen to and understand what children and young people really feel. It is a simple way to check in with them. Over time Kitbag can help grow empathy for others. It provides a natural way to deepen relationships
Teaching staff identified pupils they felt would benefit from this intervention and small groups were established. Each group receives two sessions of around 20 minutes per week, delivered by a SFLA.
Teachers are also delivering whole class Kitbag sessions during HWB lessons, and the resource is also used to support restorative conversations amongst friendship groups when required.
There is no right or wrong way to use Kitbag. Unrolling the outer bag opens up a special time and space. The Talking Stick provides a simple structure for everyone to have their turn, to speak and be listened to with respect. Some people like to start by using the “Calming Oil” and smelling the scent. A number of prompt cards are then available to stimulate conversation about feelings and consider the feelings of others. The open ended nature of a Kitbag session allows natural flow, with the talking stick ensuring all voices are heard and puppets available to support learners with accessing their own emotions.
This intervention is in it's early stages, but the intended outcome is to support children in co-regulation and self regulation by helping them recognise and discuss how they are feeling. We hope to promote empathy by allowing children space to consider the feelings of others.
