Braes High School is fully comprehensive teaching S1 to S6 with a current roll of approximately 1,000 pupils. As part of our self-evaluation on How Good Is Our School? Quality Indicator: 3.1 Ensuring Wellbeing, Equality and Inclusion, our Onwards and Upwards team strategically lead on PEF funded interventions designed to increase equity.
Explore is a collaborative initiative between Onwards and Upwards (PEF) and the Pupil Support Team to improve key skills through outdoor learning. The programme works with a group of pupils in S2/S3 who have a range of social, emotional, economic and learning barriers.
The Explore programme normally begins with a two night residential which is funded with a partnership with the Scottish Youth Hostelling Association where pupils identify the skills they want to work non through the programme. Normally, there would be 12 outdoor days which include walking, climbing, camping, bush craft and canoeing. Moreover, half of these sessions took place at weekends and all activities were free of charge as equity of opportunity was one of the key drivers.
