Six primary school ELC centres, two stand alone ELC centres and all seven primary schools worked together to plan and co-ordinate a cluster wide transition project to engage all staff, pupils and families in effective transition. Head of Muir PS ELC, Antonine PS ELC, Denny PS ELC, Nethermains PS ELC, Dunipace PS ELC, Bankier PS ELC, Bonnybridge PS, Bonnypark ELC Centre and Myot View ELC Centre were the dynamic team. The core transition leadership team met to plan and prepare a project which would capture the children's interests, excite them about their move to Primary 1 and engage families with the project. Each setting then shared information with families and encouraged them to join in with transition activities. This theme was used as the basis of transition learning and discussions with pupils to talk about change/moving on and celebrating this as a positive step for all pupils. All pupils, no matter which ELC they attend or which school they will transition to, will have played an active role in the project and have a familiar theme for their journey in Primary 1 for August 2021.
Created a theme based around "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" story by Eric Carle to engage, enthuse and celebrate transition. Set up a new transition twitter page Denny Cluster P1 Transition @p1_denny for families and ELCs to follow and share experiences. Used a shared hashtag for all transition tweets #HungryforP1 Resourced all ELC settings and future P1 classrooms with soft toy Caterpillar characters. A whole cluster scavenger hunt to launch the project. Devised a range of core activities and ideas for ELC staff to develop and adapt for their settings and families.
Clear communiation between the core team, the cluster ELCs and to families was the key to effective engagement and participation. There were core activities for all ELC staff to engage with:- Cluster Scavenger Hunt - pupils were given a map of locations and a very hungry caterpillar postcard. The aim was to find all 20 pictures around the cluster. Families were encouaged to tweet their success and pupils shared their stories with staff and peers in ELC centres. Make and create your own caterpillar. "What matters to me?" sheets for pupils and families to fill out for ELC and P1 staff. All ELC centres engaging with caring for real caterpillars and sharing their releasing of the caterpillars. ELC settings also then used children's interests and pupil voice to support other activities for the project. Sharing, commenting, tweeting and re-tweeting everyone's success and using time at Early Years planning meetings to discuss progress and engagement.
The project has been a huge success and highly engaging. Parental engagement in supporting tweets and in discussions around activities has been positive and encouraging. All ELC pupils in the Denny cluster have been engaged and active participants in the theme and activities. All ELC pupils will have a familiar story, caterpillar character and experience of the theme in moving to P1. The caterpillar theme will be extended and developed in P1 from August 2021 to support pupil health & well-being.
Parents have been really engaged and enthusiatic about the project - it has been a welcome ray of sunshine in what has been a difficult year for all. There is a real excitement in the air about the transition to Primary 1. (Headteacher)
