Clackmannanshire Primary PE team Google slides resources for remote PE
This work was driven by the Covid-19 schools closures in 2020/21. All schools in Clackmannanshire used Google classroom to deliver remote learning to classes during school closures. It was recognised in the authority that we should focus on engagement and try to develop visually engaging resources and materials that were as accessible as possible to all learners, regardless of reading ability and access to equipment. the problem we were trying to solve was in providing meaningful and engaging PE activities that had clear learning intentions and success criteria but could be accessed at home with no PE equipment and accessible to all.
We produced a series of self-service curriculum-aligned interactive visual learning experiences for primary PE in a remote learning context. They ere designed to be accessed by pupils of all ages and abilities and worked through from home.
Clackmannanshire primary PE team faced a significant challenge of providing curricular PE resources for lockdown remote learning. The team worked collaboratively to develop a digital solution for this and all staff worked hard to learn new digital skills in order to deliver on their ambition to create visually engaging learning for children across Clackmannanshire.
The Primary PE team in Clacks is led by Principal teacher, Karen Grossart who was responsible for leading the team towards developing these materials and ensuring that there was a moderation and quality-assurance process in place as well as a process for iterative design and development that used feedback from users to inform next steps.
" It's been a steep technology learning curve for everyone in the team. These resources took considerable time and effort to develop but the team worked collaboratively to get it done and it's actually been really great for develop team relationships and boosting morale during remote working"
The team worked collaboratively to explore how we could develop meaningful PE resources and activities for home learning. We used Google slides to create visual virtual learning that incorporated multi-media visuals and immersive learning strategies to really focus on engagement and accessibility.
The impact of this work will be long-lasting and goes beyond the Covid lockdown closures. We have received a number of contacts from other local authorities around this work and feedback from our team is that they will become a very useful resource for times when PE halls are in use or wet weather activities need to be factored-in. It was a lot of work to develop but we now have a bank of high-quality digital learning resources for the curriculum we teach and that means we can ensure consistency and quality across the team as well as making it easy for us all to deliver meaningful learning in any context.
Clackmannanshire Council partners with Tablet Academy Scotland to support schools and education with digital transformation. Tablet Academy is an official partner of Google for Education and their Director, Pam Currie gave us very positive feedback:
" The work of the Primary PE team in Clackmannanshire to develop immersive and interactive PE learning digitally is sector-leading. Their approach puts children right at the heart of the developments and the team thought very carefully and innovatively about usual video, audio and animations and creating engaging, pupil-friendly topics as a context for the learning. I cannot praise this work highly enough. They approached it iteratively and worked collaboratively to really enhance the offer and used feedback to make improvements as they developed them. This is an agile approach that is 100% focused on user experience and sprints of activity around a clear focus. " Pam Currie, Tablet Academy Scotland
We also received some great feedback from parents, pupils and schools themselves

The teacher videos explaining the work were excellent as were Mr Coyle's PE slidesPE slides had an audio button so younger children could listen if they can't read which would allow even more independent working
