CONTEXT / BACKGROUND
The Parent Council committee at Bathgate Academy, were keen to think of innovative ways to encourage more parental engagement in their setting and beyond. The Parent Council designed an engaging and eye-catching poster to support their 'BACK UP your child' campaign.
WHAT WE DID
Bathgate Academy Parent Council worked with a design company to design a school neutral poster to promote parental involvement and how parents/carers can BACK UP their child's educational experience.
BACKUP stands for :
B : Be supportive of your child's achievements
A : Attend your School's Parent Council
C : Communicate with the school and teachers
K : Know your child's learning strengths and needs
U : Understand what your child is learning at school
P : Promote your time to get involved
The poster was published in January 2020 and the goal was to share this widely with other school settings.
HOW WE DID IT
Bathgate Academy Parent Council worked in partnership with West Lothian Council to explore how to share the 'BACK up your child' poster campaign.
By early February 2020, the Backup Campaign poster had been circulated by West Lothian Council to all schools in West Lothian for use by other parent councils.
Bathgate Academy Parent Council had been in contact with the National Parent Forum to work in partnership to widen the distribution and sharing of this campaign.
IMPACT / OUTCOMES
Bathgate Academy Parent Council's 'BACK up your child' poster campaign has been shared throughout West Lothian.
In addition the National Parent Forum of Scotland had circulated the poster on
their Twitter and Facebook accounts.
By May 2020, letter had also been received from John Swinney MSP, the Deputy First Minister and Education & Skills Secretary ( in 2020) recognising the work and best practise being adopted by Bathgate Academy Parent Council.
Other parent councils have been in touch with Bathgate Academy's Parent Council to learn more about the campaign.
